King's Sconce (site of). (1)
The King's Sconce, a large outwork near the north gate of the final defences of Newark, was built by the royalist defenders after the lifting of the 1644 siege. The site was destroyed in the late C19. Shown on Clampe's and NWM plans as a large square earthwork with diamond bastions, similar in size to Queen's Sconce, with an entrance on the SW side. Clampe additionally shows house in centre, 2 cannon firing to N and E respectively and a track approaching the entrance. (2)
Published site now occupied by modern industrial building. In situation the outwork covered both the Trent and the main line of march to Lincoln. (3)
