Full Description

Defences at Winthorpe are now destroyed but in part traceable. The defences enclosed a roughly rectangular area, approx 500yds by 300yds, aligned along the Newark - Gainsborough road but excluding the site of the present church. 2 demi-bastions flanked the SW approach from Newark and the other sides were either of tenaille or indented trace. No earthwork remains survive but a stream N of the village preserves the outline of the NW side of the defences, from footbridge to sharp bend. (1)
