Full Description
The summer months of 1792 and 1793 being extremely dry, the foundations of an immense bridge appeared in the river Trent (rendered shallow by the drought) near to the little village of Winthorpe by Newark. On examination, there was every reason to think them as old as the time of the Romans (notes that it was made of stone, executed with the most perfect masonry). If a line were drawn from Southwell to Brough, it would pass … over this very bridge. (1)
VCH conclude this is a mis-siting for Cromwell bridge, M4286. (2)
Dickinson's description makes it clear he is describing a spot north of Winthorpe, at approximately above GR. This is therefore not the same as Cromwell bridge, or the piles seen to south (L3703). (4)
