Full Description

Runs from Chesterfield to the Trent at West Stockwith. Work began on the canal in 1771 and it was completed in 1777. The canal had broad locks from West Stockwith to Retford (the Town Lock being the first narrow one). The most important trade was coal, other goods included iron, stone and lead. After 1850 trade declined, and the upper reaches of the canal were closed due to subsidence. The Norwood tunnel collapsed in 1908. The whole length in Notts has water and it is navigable from Worksop to the Trent. There are 23 locks and c 49 bridges in Notts (see individual records). (1)
Grid ref is for county boundary.
