Full Description

Fragments of Roman bricks and tiles which almost cover a space of near 30 yards square. From the number of large pieces of cinder, and stones that have been partly vitrified, this must have been the place where the Romans had their tile kilns. (1)
A narrow bank, covered with undergrowth, about 20yds long and 2ft high. Trial holes revealed that this feature was made up entirely of Ro roofing tiles. It is suggested that these were the cast-offs or stock of a Ro tile kiln (not found). (2)
(A) clay bank containing kiln waste - roof, flue and hypocaust tiles, cf Mansfield Woodhouse villa. (B) Wasters. (C) All the clay subsoil has been removed, for tile making from this area. (see sketch) (3)
Gradiometer survey carried out 1982 - various anomalies noted. (4)
The feature consists of a mound of clay subsoil containing a large number of roof tile fragments and some pieces of limestone. (Material excavated from 1m wide trench) mostly tegula tiles, a few pieces of imbrex, and possible hypocaust tiles. Also 3 abraded pottery sherds. The heap appears to be the result of field clearance, probably in C19 as it was not mentioned by Rooke. (5)
See L3959 for nearby site, L5324 for pottery finds.
