Full Description

A hillfort situated on and around Whinny Hill. On the crown of the hill the camp follows the natural line, but on the E side ... the vallum appears to have gone up the hill, where a hedge has been planted along it, and on the S side ... it apparently turned down by the side of a sunk road, which, at 300ft to the E, terminates in a brook. At the base of the hill on the NW side is a double vallum and double fosse extending about 160yds. The inner vallum rises 4ft from the foot of the hill and descends nearly 8ft into a fosse 6ft wide at the bottom; the second vallum, 12ft in thickness, is of the same height as the first, the outer fosse is 4 ft deep (based on (2)). (1)
The remains of an exploratory camp at Whinny Hill. (2)
The site is now built over. The series of banks and ditches noted on the NW by (1) look rather like old terraced roads that no longer exist. The OS 25in 1914 shows a N-S ditch at SK 54956371 but this has also gone. Mansfield museum have no information regarding this feature. (3)
Listed as a possible hillfort site (IA), now built over. (4)
Whinny Hill - a small multivallate IA hillfort. (5)
See L4202 for flint find.
