Full Description

An aisleless Norman chapel consisting of nave and chancel. The chancel arch is simple enough to be as early as c.1100. An interesting sedile against the S wall, just a stone seat with low arms. Some Dec windows, two old roof beams. (1)
Excavation of destroyed portion of church - W end walls 1.20m thick. Soil patched with areas of cobble - same phase? levelling up? destruction? Wall has good faces, with rubble infill. W end destroyed by C19 reduction of building. (C Swarbrick and Vicar hold photos). (2)
[The] chancel arch … probably belongs to the latter half of the 12th century. Early in the 14th century the chapel was reroofed, and two tie-beams remain. Early in the 19th century the west wall was taken down and rebuilt further east. Sir Richard Fitzherbert … [undertook] a thorough restoration … in 1893. The debased E window was removed, and … three round-headed lights inserted. (3)
