Full Description

In the copse on the common are five round mounds, averaging 8-9 yards in diameter and of low elevation. Some excavation was undertaken by the writer.. (but) ..unfortunately, never completed…All the mounds lie in an area of 40-yards' radius, on high commanding ground and Keuper marl…these mounds may well be Roman barrows. (1)
In a copse, on what was Laxton Common, 3 or perhaps 4 low mounds as reported by Dr A Oswald. The largest has a trench cut through part way, filled in and the surface fill subsided. The common has been cleared and planted with wheat N of the main road. Marks can be seen in the crop which competely encloses the copse. (2)
At least 4 mounds of soil in woodland enclosed by a drainage ditch. (3)
See L 8587 for Ro finds, L's 9404 & 9405 for nearby earthworks.
NB Pierce's map of 1635 shows a building standing in the NW quarter of the copse.
