Full Description

At Westwood farm on the east side of the Tuxford-Kirton road and one field south of the farm, is a very visible complex of earthworks, which are compassed on the east by a shallow, winding ditch interrupted by frequent causways across it. These works placed on the sticky Keuper marl, appear to have covered an area of about 15 acres. The interior works consist mainly of rectangular enclosures formed by banks and ditches, although at one point is a large, irregular mound apparently composed of fallen debris, judging by the Roman tiles and mortar cast up by rabbits and moles. Over the whole area the writer recovered quantities of 1st - 3rd century Roman pottery, fragments of querns, Roman roofing tile and poorly worked flints. (1)
A (Ro) village has been identified on a plateau near Westwood Farm. A complex of rectangular earthworks cover about 15 acres, with a causewayed ditch to the E. An irregular mound within (produced Ro finds). The causewayed ditch suggests a Neo date. (2)
Cropmarks at SK 714700, and possible remains of a ditch at SK 71526996. (3)
NWM hold a large collection of occupational material (Mes-Med) from the general area. The farmer has no knowledge of earthworks. The plateau is now mainly plough. A profusion of Ro (and Med) pottery was found in the vicinity of the siting symbol together with fragmentary tile. No earthworks can be identified although the fields are much disturbed. (4)
S Linley of Farley's Farm Tuxford in 1948 dug trial holes on this site and found brick and stone pillars, according to his account. It thus appears that this may be a villa rather than a Romano-british village as suggested in (1). (Report by MW Barley, 21/04/1950). (5)
