Full Description

Cross at North Collingham (not an Eleanor Cross), the whole length of its shaft having been profusely crocketed. So liberal an ornamentation of of the village cross is very rare. On one side, are figures very like 1657, which evidently bear no reference to the date of its erection. In fact, it belongs to the Decorated period, and was perhaps built during the C14. (1)
The lower portion only of the shaft remains, square in section, with remains of ornamentation too eroded to describe, standing on a square plinth with chamfered clipped corners. 38 (sic) step square base. (2)
Base, socket stone and part of shaft of ? C14 N Collingham village cross. (3)
The cross has been removed from its previous site (SK 8323 6231) to a small green across the road (above grid ref). (4)
Shaft is Lincs limestone; the decoration although worn may be vine scroll ? C14 shaft is chamfered and so is its base at corners. Shaft is 1.00m high. (5)
Under Shire Customs - The Abbot of Peterborough has full juristriction and market rights over Collingham. (6)
The original position of the cross, at the S end of a wide section of street, would suggest it is a market cross. The elaborate decoration could be because it was provided by the Abbot - see also the crocketed pinnacles on All Saints Church. (7)
See M18657 for cross base in churchyard wall.
