Full Description

An enclosed hut group, with an oval earth and stone bank c 100ft in diameter, and a surrounding dry ditch, was discovered during the part clearance of Scratta Wood. Excavations from 1960-64 revealed bases of round huts and storage pits. IA pottery, including a situlate type jar and a Fengate type rim, was found, together with a saucer quern and part of a beehive type (plus others). Ro finds included part of a C2 brooch (plus 2 other brooches - see source), and C1- C3 pottery. (1) (2) (3) (4) (5)
Excavations carried out under the supervision of Mr GF White who is preparing the final report for publication. The site is now under plough but the stone ring can still be traced. (6)
Listed as an IA small stone built enclosure with late IA storage pits, some stone lined, some bell shaped with evidence of clay capping. (7)
Rescue work was undertaken after the site was revealed and badly damaged by bulldozing in 1959. A stone-walled, oval enclosure with internal huts and partitions was seen; the original entrance, to the E, was marked by a timber gateway. From it to the N beyond the wall ran a probable drainage ditch up to 2.5ft deep. Interior and exterior structures were badly damaged, and the plan is incomplete. A series of interior limestone walls defined huts and divisions. A possible post-hole structure was found which may pre-date the stone enclosure wall. Storage pits, some bell shaped, were discovered mainly in the NW area of the enclosure. Finds included iron slag, wattle, daub and beehive querns, and pottery indicating a date from mid C1 BC onwards, the main period of occupation apparently dating to the late IA. C2-C3 AD material indicated re-occupation or squatting. (8) (9) (11) (12)
See L8690 for flint finds.
Much fieldwalking in this area - see SMR map (and 58 SW).
