Full Description

In 1761 the house was accidentally destroyed by fire, but it was soon afterwards rebuilt. Of late years (pre 1849) it has been pulled down. (2)
When the Duke of Newcastle purchased the property in 1839 he caused the greater part of the house to be pulled down. After a lapse of some considerable time it was rebuilt, such portions of the old building that remained being converted into a good residence. (3)
The house was consumed by fire in 1761 and was replaced by part of a ... composition by James Paine. After only one wing was finished, the death of the heir in 1767 stopped the Duchess [of Norfolk]'s enthusiasm for the new house. All that remains is the rusticated basement of the N side with one room behind it … and Paine's splendid screen, with its Doric columns and triumphal arch. (4)
The Duke of Newcastle's demolition of c 1840 removed the main building, leaving the E court, or servants' quarters intact, a new portion ... was built and the ground on which the former house stood was converted into a conservatory and terrace. (6)
The present Worksop Manor is entirely modern, the large quadrangle of offices and farm buildings being of the C18, and the private residence adjoining the S side being of the C19. To the W is a terrace with greenhouse, presumably those referred to above, as being the site of the former C18 house. Of the preceding house, not a trace remains anywhere. (8)
The Duke [9th of Norfolk] laid the foundation stone on 25/03/1763 and the house was built on the same site as the Elizabethan Manor, although it was much smaller in size … consisted of one wing of twenty-three bays, 318 feet long, facing north. … the exterior was complete by July 1764. … The original plan for the house was a quadrangle with the main front on the south, but only the north wing was completed. … the 4th Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne ... sold off the fabric of the building, including the doors, windows, ceilings, floors and lead from the roof, and demolished most of the remainder of the house in June 1841.
