Full Description

Religious house for Premonstratensian Canons founded 1153-4; dissolved 1538. In 1291 the number of canons was probably at least 26. (1)
The S range and the S end of the dorter remained recognisable until the mid C18; it was not long before all landmarks were obliterated by modern (C19) Welbeck Abbey taking shape. A few vaults still remain, part of the vaulted undercroft still survives on ground level, and a fragment of the W wall of the church is still in place in a basement room. (2) (3)
Largest Abbey of its order in England. (4)
Not visited, as now a military school - presence of remains confirmed. (5)
By 1512 [Welbeck was] recognized as the head house of the order in England. Very little of it survives: seven bays of the undercroft dating from c.1250, the southernmost three bays with original vaulting, the rest with C18 vaults; [and a] doorway of c.1180. These remains are in what is now the basement. (6)
See M8702 for P Med house.
