Full Description

Worksop Mill, demolished about turn of century (1900). Site now occupied by public swimming baths. The wall (of the mill house) nearest the river is of stone which may indicate that the mill was similarly built. Water from the Ryton would have provided power. (02/08/1963). (1)
Mill pond and baths shown. (2)
The mill had four pairs of stones in 1872 as a water and steam powered mill. It seems to have ceased milling in 1876 … and closed in 1912 after a disastrous fire. (3)
The mill is referred to in the foundation charter of the priory in the early C12. A lease of 1699 refers to a mill "formerly called the Walk-mill". A later lease of 1729 relates to "that newly-erected mill … where an old dying or fulling mill and an old dwelling house lately stood". A plan of the Pond Yards shows the mill as two adjoining two-storeyed buildings. Sometime between 1817 and 1835 the leat feeding the mill was dammed to form a large pond known as the Canch. The mill went out of use in c 1876, was reused as a saw mill at the end of the century, but was destroyed by fire in 1912. (4)
