Full Description

Thoresby Hall was built for the 3rd Earl Manvers by Anthony Salvin between 1865 and 1875. Probably the most ambitious Victorian mansion in Notts., it is of Neo-Tudor design and built in stone with a large central courtyard and a 3 storey hall with bay window and hammerbeam roof. The main staircase rises under a central tower. The interior is mainly Jacobean. It is listed Grade 1 and is open to the public. (1) (2)
The detail is disappointing … Most of it is probably by Salvin's son Osbert. In one of the bedrooms, an C18 fireplace by John de Val from the second Thoresby. (1)
Large country house. Built 1864-71 by A. Salvin with details by O. Salvin for the third Earl Manvers. (4)
