Full Description
The site of Clumber House is now a grassed area with the outline of the most recent house (demolished in 1939) in paving. The first building known on the site was a hunting lodge probably built in the reign of Queen Anne after the Park was created. Foundations of this building were found during work prior to rebuilding the later house after a fire in 1879. Work on a larger house was underway by 1763 and completed by the mid 1770s. A library area was added in 1829. After the fire of 1879 the house was rebuilt and survived until 1939 when it was demolished. Excavations in 1978 revealed C18 and C19 foundations. Finds from the excavations included coarse wares, which were sent to Nottingham university for analysis, and fine wares which included medieval pottery, stonewares, porcelain, mottled wares, delft etc. The fine wares are missing but may be in store somewhere at Clumber.
