Full Description

Small stone bridge which has 2 pointed arches with chamfered arch rings, the only bridge of this type in the county. Its total span is only 9yds, but the width is about 18ft, the bridge having been widened by means of concrete girders. (1)
Probably an Elizabethan bridge, c 1600 AD. Stone cutwater N and S, concrete pillars and scaffold rails do little to enhance bridge, which can only be realized when one is below the main structure. (2)
An Early C17 two span masonry arch bridge…widened in the 1930s using concrete steel cantilevers. An inspection in 1997 determined that the arches were only capable of carrying 13 tonne GVW and the cantilevers were only able to withstand 3 tonne GVW. A number of defects in the arches…cantilevers heavily spalled with cracking in the concrete. In 1998 a 13 tonne GVW limited was imposed…and the carriageway reduced to a single lane. (3)
Reference to bridge in 1216. (4)
Shown on Chapman and Sanderson. (5) (6)
NB Listed as "Eel Pie Bridge".
