Full Description

Deserted village of Whimpton. Earthworks included sunken roads, enclosures - mostly square including moated site (k) - and a raised earthen platform (e). Excavations near (f) and (g) revealed a layer of broken stones at a depth of 9in. The village was undoubtedly deserted before 1547. (1)
SK 7904 7413 Church type foundations. (2)
A petition of 1414 possibly refers to the enclosure of parkland here. (3)
The earthworks marked on the 6in sheet appear to be drainage and possibly defensive works for the occupation site on the higher ground to the S. A clearly defined rectangle with rounded corners measures 54yds N, 54yds S, 117yds W and 118yds E. All over the higher ground are depressions surrounded by low rectangular banks, well defined and containing large pebbles just below the turf. The tenant of Ragnall Field Farm, aged 69, says field has never been ploughed in his lifetime. (4)
The surviving earthworks were resurveyed, the foundations noted by (2) could not be identified. (5)
There has been no change since 1962. See APs - (8). (6)
DMV with holloways and rig and furrow, reversed S type, covers most of the scheduled area with some small closes and tofts in the far SW corner. No sign of the large enclosure described on the map and sheet - merely baulks and ridge and furrow. Thick thistles and high grass little cropped. Recommend next visit in the winter to complete a full survey and fuller analysis of works at a minimal (sic) scale of 1: 2500. The present details are insufficient and new neighbours have little or no knowledge oflandowners or site. (7)
Morph: 158.7.1 hollowway, 158.7.2 moat, 158.7.3 toft, 158.7.4 platform, 158.7.5 field system. (11)
The aerial photographs of (8) mentioned in (6) do not appear to show the site, indeed the flooded land they show may not even be in Nottinghamshire. (12)
