Full Description

Early English chancel arch and south arcade. Perpendicular south aisle. Restored by Sir George Gilbert Scott in 1855. Medieval effigies of a C14th prior and priest along with an alabaster effigy believed to be of Sir Bertram Manboucher, c.1420. (1)

There is an 18th century crypt at the western end of the south aisle. Only the topmost courses of the brick work were exposed before the ground was stabilised and the new floor constructed above it. The very loose backfill above the crypt was found to contain discarded architectural stonework. This stonework consisted of both old material discarded as it was broken or badly weathered and waste material, probably from the 19th century refurbishment of the church. An area of the chancel floor was also investigated due to its unevenness, the cause of which appeared to be the settling of the same uncompacted material that was encountered over the crypt in the south aisle. (2)

The drainage works in the churchyard recorded the location of five intact buries. (2)
