Full Description
The steeple is an early example of its type. It has the diagonal buttresses of so many Notts late C15 towers, but the west door and windows prove it to belong to the early C14. The broad spire with its one tier of dormers is of c.1357. The nave is rather short and tall, with four largish clerestory windows. The chancel, dated to 1495 has the same five-light east windows as East Markham. The north arcade with circular piers, double-chamfered arches, and moulded capitals is clearly C13, the south arcade with octagonal piers may be c.1300. (1)
A college was added to the church in 1362. It was staffed by 5 chaplains, but reduced to 3 in 1368 when the college was reallocated to Newstead Priory. It was surrendered to Henry VIII before 1545. (2)
Tuxford chapel - "site uncertain or unknown". (3)
No mention of college in local records. "Chapel" may refer to church. (4)
