Full Description

Deserted Med village of Swainston had separate mention in 1316 and tax list of 1334. Loss due to lack of relief in 1434. Exact location unsure. (1)
Swanston (lost) Swanesterne 1086. (2)
Vague markings centred at SK 810746 possibly indicate site. (3)
Local enquiry and examination of early county maps were negative. (4)
There are no surface indications of desertion in the above indicated area and the name "Swainton" was not known to local persons questioned. The whole of the suggested site falls within the village of Dunham and is either built over or farmland. Slight surface irregularities - not significant ? (5)
Manor Croft … a small scatter of pottery sherds ranging in date from the late C12 - C17 was identified on the surface of flower beds and borders beside the house. Manor Close lies close to the site of Swanston DMV and these finds provide some indication of the date range of the occupation. (6)
Faint earthworks visible in unusually shaped field (above grid ref). (7)
More buildings shown in the enclosure containing Manor Farm, which is bounded by Chequers Lane (now cut off). (8)
See also M4701 (on SK 87 SW) for excavated building, M11454 for Manor Farmhouse.
