Full Description

Earthworks in field behind the "White Swan" Inn, levelled by farmer in 1965- 6. A spread of cobbles with pottery noted, C13 ware and later green glazed sherds from the Nottingham kilns. (1)
Sherds, tiles, stone roofing materials and concentrations of pebbles were noted on the surface. Excavation revealed low dressed stone wall 20ft long, running E-W. 3 walls at right angles to it. Further finds of late Med pottery, ridge tiles, nails etc. (3)
The house site is now under pasture and there are no surface traces. Mr Minnitt is engaged on research relative to this house. (4)
Stone wall foundations of a substantial building uncovered, finds included limestone architectural fragments. Patterned glass and window lead, timber and nails also found. Pottery included Maiolica and Saintonge, with green glaze and Nottingham wares. Other finds included an iron axe head, a bronze buckle and belt end, a sliver penny (probably Henry III) and three pieces of querns. (5)
