Full Description

Blyth Law - an oval shaped mound 132ft by 94ft, 12ft 4in high. Excavations by CE Whiting, 1937. At least 8 inhumations found, some laid out, others disarticulated, at a depth of 3ft to 4ft 6in. Mound man made, from alluvial material. No datable objects were found. Historical evidence suggests the mound was the site of the gallows for both the Priory of Blyth and the Lords of Hodsock. (2)
A large mound with a max diameter of 38.0m and a max height of 3.2m. The top is hollowed - now rubbish filled - and the marks of the excavation are quite visible, there is no evidence of a ditch. The human remains found were deposited with Durham University. (3)
Emergency excavations were carried out by Worksop ARS under the direction of GF White, due to road improvement work. A precise date for the mound was not given - ditched, and built of turf, probably an example of an early bell-shaped round barrow, used in the Med period as the site of a gallows. Soil conditions were poor for the preservation of inhumations. THe whole crown of the mound had been turned over in the past, in some parts to a depth of 4ft. The mound would have originally been 90ft in diameter and up to possibly 15ft in height. The ditch, however, was not a true circle, varying in diameter between 105ft and 107ft. (5)
