Full Description

Chancel restored and nearly rebuilt by Pearson, 1885-6. The Perp W tower of the usual E Notts type (ashlared, diagonal butresses, battlements, 8 pinnacles), dated 1504, survived him. The N side is all new, by WS Weatherley and Jones 1891-2; the S side goes with the tower. Inside, the N arcade with circular piers and low moulded capitals was originally EE. Font Norman, with a small kind of lozenge frieze at the top. Altar table Elizabethan. Small C14 and C15 fragments of stained glass in the tower window. Mutilated effigy of a knight, second half of C14, and John Helwys, 1599, alabaster - the effigy has gone. (1)
St Martin's Church is now redundant. (2)
C14 S porch. … The N side has a square headed coved opening containing a triple Decorated lancet window. … Internally, the tower arch is C13 in date … The S wall has an elaborate and apparently unrestored C14 ogee headed piscina. Watching brief on lifting of altar step - the faint rectangular outline seen in the white mortar may represent the base for a former altar, in place before the existing tiled altar step was constructed, presumably as part of the 1885 - 86 restoration of the chancel.
