Full Description

Cropmark, series of small enclosures, hut circles. Field boundaries, droveways. Cut by modern road. (1)
Complex cropmarks c 2.0Ha in area, intersected by Chain Bridge Road, which are difficult to interpret. (2)
Salvage excavations as site was being destroyed by gravel quarrying, 1985. Ditches sectioned, finds included pig skeleton, Ro pottery and a bird brooch. Much waterlogging. Most of site destroyed without recording. (3)
Morph: 145.1.1 enclosure, 145.1.2 trackway, 145.2.1 enclosure, 145.2.2 field system, 145.2.3 hut circle. (4)
The pattern of archaeological features was more complex than the cropmarks had suggested, with some modification to the layout of the landscape, and previously unsuspected scatters of discreet features, untested by excavation, but suggestive of some settlement activity. The limited excavations recovered a small number of RB pottery finds, including C1 AD types not well represented in the 1980s excavations. No organic deposits were preserved within even the deeper ditches; sadly this work confirmed that this site, which 14 years ago had waterlogged deposits, has dessicated. There was no evidence for alluvium sealing the ditches, in contrast to the area of the 1980s excavations. (6)
See L8766 - linear feature to N, L8767 - IA coin.
