Full Description

Pumping station, 1828 and 1859. The "Soss" is composed of 2 buildings, one on either side of the Warping Drain. The buildings, which are still in good condition, are built mainly of brick, but the lintels and sills of the windows and the piers supporting the flood gates are of stone. Building 1 is 45ft x 52ft and has a height of 53ft from water level to ridge of roof. Building 2 is 45ft x 49 ft and of the same height. The 2 chimneys are 80ft high and have bases 8ft square. 2 flood gates 12ft high are supported between 3 stone piers occupying a width of 23ft. All machinery appears to have been removed except for a simple hand-operated winding gear (situated above flood gates) for raising and lowering gates. There is evidence of there having been 2 large water wheels - only pits and sockets remain. (19/09/1964). (1)
Steam drainage pumps on the Mother drain at Misterton Soss. 2 engine and pump houses remain, one either side of the drain, built to house beam engines which propelled scoop wheels. Machinery all gone. The N side building appears to be earlier, the S side has date stone "1828 Alfred Smith Engineer". Each building still has its tall square chimney with stone embellished "crown" caps. (2)
