Full Description
Castle Hill Wood, where, as its name imports, has formerly stood a castle on a mount, which appears to have been surrounded by a double trench of considerable magnitude, having the entrance to the SE (may be refering to park pale). (1)
The "Outwork" is a small, well preserved circular defensive earthwork, in part surrounded by a ditch, it commands an outstanding topographical position which, together with its form of construction and general condition, suggest it is possibly of the Civil War period. Similar works attributable to this period have previously been encountered in the NW of England. (3)
This small feature is possibly a hunt standing, associated with the possible hunting lodge nearby. (4)
See M4947 for Med buidling to E, M5164 for park pale.
