Full Description

Eastwood. The Church is dedicated to St. Mary, [and] was built about fifty years ago (i.e. c.1747), it is mostly of brick. It has a tower. (1)
The parish church of St Mary, rebuilt during 1858, is of ancient origin. The extant registers only date back to 1711 as a fire in that year destroyed all previous registers. (2)
The church is in use for public worship. A board in the church gives a list of rectors of Eastwood from 1286 to the present day. The present church was built 1856-8 on the site of the old church. This latter was a small brick building erected in 1787 and enlarged in 1826 (from parish mag ?). (3)
Only the embattled tower of the … church of 1858 by Robert Barber of Eastwood survived the fire of 1963. New nave and chancel 1966-7 by Royle & Whitehorn of Nottingham. (6)
The new church was designed by Mr. Robert Barber of Ivy Cottage, Church Street, and was built by J. Fisher of Thurland Street, Nottingham. The church was consecrated and opened on 1st July 1858. (7)
