Full Description

The Cross. The name only is retained, for the structure is gone … According to tradition … a stone erection, with steps surmounted by a cross. It is said that less than a hundred years ago vestiges of an old stone cross were here … the last vestiges having been removed about 1860. (1)

The remains of a cross, probably the pedestal, about 1ft high (at SK 52823676). No information was obtainable as to the original site. (2)

Remains of village cross re-erected here 1937. (3)

Cross now moved to above grid ref. (4)

Originally on a spot near the War Memorial. It was taken down in the 1850's and was discovered embedded in the walls of Manor Lodge by ... Mr Arthur Cossons, and was re-erected in the grounds of the Manor School, where Mr Cossons was the headmaster. (5)

The description of (4) fits the cross remains in (2). Probably a wayside cross. (6)

Village cross. C14. Re-sited and restored c.1860. Dressed stone. Square base. Tapered square shaft approx. 3ft. high (8) (9)

Stapleton notes, in 1902, a possible cross shaft with square base utilised in a bridge over a stream in Ley's Lane, Chilwell (Ley's Lane not located on OS 25" 1901). (10)
