Full Description

Cock pytt. (1)
Cock pit. (2)
The remains of this feature are at above grid ref and comprise a circular earthen bank 17.0m in diameter, 1.5m wide and no more than 0.2m high. Excavated last year by Mr J Turner but no finds were apparently made. (3)
Excavation began in the summer of 1974 on Site 1 which seemed to correspond with the praetorium of Rooke's letter. The interior of the enclosure was sectioned but it contained only household refuse of the early and mid-20th century. The bank was not sectioned. (4)
The position of Site 1 in (4) appears to correspond exactly with the site of the cockpit, as does the site of the 'praetorium' on the sketch plan in (5). (6)
See M2051 for hillfort.
