Full Description

The site of the infirmary is now occupied by a rose garden and the SE wing. Letters patent of 1356-7 indicate that the infirmary was E of the cloister and close to the churchyard. A blocked doorway in the E cloister, S of the chapter house or a passage beneath the E part of the S range may have led to it. No traces of the building are left above ground. (1)
It is almost certain the the SE wing when rebuilt in the early C19 followed the Med foundations and incorporated part of the Med structure. Vaulting in one room on the ground floor is certainly Med and there are traces of a vaulted undercroft below ground level. (3)
This wing forms part of the private apartments at the Abbey. No Med work could be seen externally. (4)
See M8939 for Priory and M8293 for medieval house.
