Full Description

At the E end of the N terrace in the Devil's Wood are the remains of an ancient gateway, with a cross in the centre and the outline of the postern opening, which has long been blocked up, plainly visible. No doubt it was a private gate on the road to the grange. (1)
The identification of this feature as an "ancient" gateway was made by a member of the Thoroton Society during a pre-war visit. (2)
The feature indicated is at the N end of the E boundary wall to the Abbey's C18/C19 formal gardens. The wall at this point is built in irregularly coursed stone and extends c 9m S of the junction with the N wall. In the opinion of this investigation the arch is contemporary with the decorative treatment of the length of walling in which it is contained. It is probably a disused C18/C19 garden entrance or folly. (3)
See M8293 for Abbey House.
