Full Description

The Abbots' Garden. (1)
The garden containing the Eagle Pond is a formal terraced type which may have changed comparatively little since the early days of the Byrons' occupation. (Suggests it was previously a monastic garden). The wall along the N of the garden is supported by C14th butresses. (2)
There is no evidence that this garden is the site of a monastic garden and the name "Abbot's Garden" is a C19 invention which is no longer used. The wall forming the N boundary to the gardens... shows no evidence to justify a C14 date. (3)
Now part of the public gardens of the Abbey. (4)
See M8293 for Abbey House, M9065 for Walls, M5295 for Ha-ha.
