Full Description
Near (to moat, M2560) is what is called Robin Hood's Well - a receptacle without any water. (1)
The "well" comprises a shallow trough of dry-laid masonry c 2.5m by 1.5m, fed by a spring from a small sand face exposed on its S side. The trough contains a little stagnant water and the spring may now have failed (said locally to be due to underlying mining). A tree has fallen across the "well", there are remains of iron railings and other fencing. No suggestion can be made as to the date of the well. Called "Friar Tuck's Well". (2)
Now overgrown and neglected. Dry and non-dateable. (3)
See M2560 for associated moat.
