Full Description

A furnace was built on the Earl of Kingston's estate at Whaley in 1617 together with a forge further E at Cuckney. The two works were established by one Martin Ash, who soon became insolvent and both furnace and forge reverted to Kingston, who still had them in hand in 1632. The forge was later leased to George Sitwell. In C18 the forge site was taken over for a cotton mill. (1)
See M4396 for cotton mill on this site, M8956 for mill pond.
