Full Description
Carlton House (presumably the same as Carlton Hall). A core supposed to be c 1650, but the present appearance late Georgian, stuccoed, of 7 bays and 2 storeys, the centre with pilasters and a pediment. (1)
Carlton Hall was demolished 2 years ago, according to builders erecting a new house near the site. Only rubble in the ground marks the spot. All outbuildings to the N are of a late period, probably Georgian. (2)
Demolished in 1955. (3)
The Clifton family built Carlton in Lindrick Hall as a hunting lodge in the early C17. Robert Ramsden of Heath Hall, near Wakefield, purchased it in the late C18 and built a large plain Georgian house with a fine top-lit staircase. The Hall was tenanted from the late C19 onwards, and was unoccupied for much of the 1920s and 1930s. During the Second World War the Hall was used by the Army Tank Corps, and German and Italian prisoners of war were kept there. (4)
