Full Description

Manor or grange passed to Robert and Hugh Thornhill after Dissolution, then to Hewitts. In 1811 the house was partially demolished. (1)
Sir Thomas Hewitt, 1656-1726, made extensive alterations and improvements at Shireoaks ... and altogether made the hall a very beautiful residence. (2)
A mid-late C17 house with 2 storeys and a basement; it is now unoccupied and derelict. There are a number of mullioned and transomed windows but the majority have been replaced by sashes. No earlier work was seen. (3)
Now inhabited, repairs carried out over the past 14 years. (5)
The Hewetts, who built it c.1600, would hardly recognize it. It was altered c.1700, partly demolished and gutted after the last Hewett's death in 1811, then patched up for the Duke of Norfolk's agent, who bought it c.1812. The plan is characteristic of Robert Smythson. Henry Hewett, d. 1599 … has perhaps the best claim to be the builder of Shireoaks. Alterations probably made by Sir Thomas Hewett (b. 1656). Several inconsistencies give a clue to its real age. To the first floor windows C16 chamfered reveals and heads, the staircase window showing their original height. (6)
Small country house. c.1600. Probably … for Henry Hewett. (7)
