Full Description

Under Plumtree: Warby Gate (lost) is Warberga, Wareberg 1086 (two manors), Warborough 1540 and Warby Gate 1790. It is derived from OE "Weardbeorg" - Watch Hill. The name is now lost but the site is probably on the brook near Normanton where there are very striking earthworks. Warby Gate was a road from Tollerton to Wardeburg. (1)
Warby Gate was the old road to Warborough now merged in Cotgrave Lane (C19 plan). (3)
Warby in Plumtree included in list of "early losses". A good small site. (4)
There are large earthworks in the stream valley NE of Manor House, Normanton, which have been thought to be Warby. A mound on the S side of the stream may be the C10 burh or fort erected by Edward. (see L819 for earthworks, L5428 for excavation and find). (5)
Earthworks at L819 are a pond bay and associated works. The derivation "Watch Hill" of (1) suggests that the name might probably be associated with Hoe Hill which stands in a commanding position and is adjacent to the ancient road of (2), but confirmation of this theory was not found, and the hill itself shows no evidence of early occupation. The finding of a prick spur (L5428) possibly has no association with Warborough. (6)
Grid ref approx - not drawn on map.
See L819 for earthworks, identified as Warborough, L5428 for find.
