Full Description
The Old Sheepwash. Said to be late C17 or early C18. Complicated rubble and ashlar structure on a stream with simple arched bridge with parapet to upstream part. Below the bridge is a wide paved and enclosed rill, the water cascading at the end into a basin of elongated oval shape c 3ft deep. In the centre is a tapered font-like stone object of similar ground plan, and at one side of the basin is a small flight of steps. On the downstream side of the basin are grooved piers for shuttering. Below this the walls are splayed back and the water is then released. The method of using the building is not clear. It has recently been restored by Boots Ltd. (1)
Shutter grooving is also visible on upstream side of bridge. (2)
Footbridge and sheepwash. Late C17. (4)
