Full Description

Near the village, there existed formerly some old almshouses and a chapel, founded by Sir William Stanhope in 1694. The charity was originally a rich one, but the bulk of the money is said to have been lost in the South Sea Bubble scheme. The buildings were destroyed 25 years ago [i.e. 1878] when only 3 old men were living here; the other 3 houses being occupied by the schoolmaster, who also had the use of the chapel as a schoolroom (see photo). (1)
The almshouses, which included a chapel and school, were totally demolished c.1880. A small portion of the surrounding wall remains. (4)
The sole remaining fragment of these former almshouses is a stretch of garden perimeter walling 21.3m long, max height 1.7m. The wall is brick constructed and shows no evidence of great age other than an infilling of narrow brick in the centre. The site is occupied by a nursery garden. (5)
On high ground on bend of road leading to Priory: site of Med spital (c 1350). (6)
It is not clear what source (6) bases the Med date on, but this site is the one referred to. (7)
