Full Description
On Sherwood Forest, in a marshy valley, c 1.5 miles W of Oxton, 1/4 mile from a small earthwork (L 5492) the writer dug a barrow, 30/09/1790. It was 123ft in circumference and surrounded by a ditch and bank. On the natural surface was a circle of clay, 8ft in diameter and 4in thick, covered with ashes. The only find was a small tooth. (1)
The above description is very vague and examination of the local terrain failed to produce either evidence of it or a likely site. Local enquiries negative. (3)
Grid ref approx - not drawn on map. See L 5492 for nearby earthwork.
