Full Description

The Hall at Selston is a modern farmstead building which contains the oak staircase of Selston Old Hall. The surrounding garden wall and gateway piers are shown on an engraving of the old hall and pronounced by JA Gotch to be either Elizabethan or Jacobean, probably the latter. (1)
Little of the manor house of c 1600 is now visible from outside. It contains an Elizabethan oak staircase with an elaborately carved newel post. (2)
Selston Hall has been replaced by a modern farmhouse but retains its name. The Hall is derelict and will be left to become a ruin. The old garden wall and gate pillars were demolished by my father many years ago. (3)
Selston Hall is now used to store hay and house farm machinery. Subsidence has affected the NE end of the building and most of the floors and ceilings of the upper storey are collapsing. The original rectangular building is of 2 storeys built of stone but with a later facing of modern brick covered by cement rendering. There are modern brick additions on the NW. The windows are sashes, the roof slated. The original entrance on the SE has been demolished to make an approach for vehicles. The staircase incorporates an ornate newel post and balustrade but they appear to have been re-used and both internally and externally the house appears to have been extensively rebuilt in the C18/C19. The course of the ancient garden walling is visible as a slight bank and ditch in the grass. (See OS photos, with SMR card.) (4)
No change. (5)
Locally Listed by Ashfield District Council (ADC Ref: 261) (7).
Demolished in 1976. Photos held by NMR. Replacement building, modelled on the old one, includes the staircase.
See also M5503 for adjacent building, Selston Old Hall, replaced by this building and also the original location of the staircase.
