Full Description

An ancient stone in the churchyard of Selston Parish Church resembles the monoliths of Arbor Low (suggests church was built on a Druid's circle). (1)
The stone is far from being bogus romantic [Authy. then refers to a lane approaching the church being called Dead Lane and states that several 'ancient ways ' converged on the church.] (2)
The stone is visible in the churchyard on the N side of the church. It stands upright, bedded in turf, with no sign of a socket stone or base. It is 1.0m high, 0.5m wide, and 0.2m thick with a battered top. There is no evidence of decoration but the stone has been worked to its rectangular section and dressing lines can be seen on it. (3)
"I have been an active member and helper in the church [SK 45 SE 7] for well over 50 years [Authy is aged 79] The stone in the churchyard was removed there from the foundations of the church
together with a stone slab in the tower during the restorations of 1905 " [The 'stone slab in the tower' is a reference to a large thin rectangular slab with a unique type of wheel cross incised
upon it, and thought to be a grave cover. This is now standing upright inside the church against the base of the tower.] (3)
The stone was removed from the foundations of the church in 1905. (4)
The surrounding area has been cleared and returfed. (5)
Locally Listed by Ashfield District Council (ADC Ref: 263) (6).
