Full Description

John Thornhaugh obtained Osberton Hall from William Lock, as a winter residence, --/09/1682 (only mention of house prior to 1714). Osberton Hall was added to considerably between 1798 and 1800. During this time some fragments of C17 stained glass were found (too late to have been from church). Also later additions. (1)
Admission to house not obtained. The house is entirely modern as seen from the exterior. No trace of pre 1800 building was seen. (3)
No visible signs of the C18 house. In 1806 William Wilkins Jun. [built a] main block of seven bays ... and an extension wing on the S side. Another storey added to the S wing by Ambrose Poynter. Virtually rebuilt in 1877 by MacVicar Anderson. (4)
Named 'Osberton Hall'. (5)
Upwards of 20 years ago [i.e. c.1880] its portico of Ionic columns was pulled down and replaced by the present structure … of Roche Abbey stone. A new wing was added at the NW front. (6)
William Burn … made considerable additions to the house between 1872-1880. A great hall … and adjoining room [were] actually executed by J. McIver Anderson, Burn's partner and nephew, after his death. (7)
See M 5525 for possible site of church.
