Full Description
Large pieces of worked oak, miscellaneous ironwork and nails, found in silt removed from the Oldcotes Dyke --/02/1970, are probably the remains of a late Med bridge, perhaps the predecessor to the Old Bridge nearby. A quantity of large stones, some thin and flat, were also found, suggesting a ford alongside the bridge. On the E bank, slight traces of a track orientated NE can be seen. Other finds included C15/C16 table knives, spurs, bronze objects etc and C16/C18 potsherds. Material in DM. (1) (2)
Large thin stone flags and fragmentary pieces of timber are still to be seen at the site, as also is the black silt. Track and ford not visible. (3)
See M 5540 for Old Bridge.
