Full Description

Hospital of St Edmund, Blyth. A leper hospital known only from a single reference - Henry III at Blyth in 1228 granted letters of protection to the Proctors of the leper hospital of St Edmund "extra Bliam". (1) conjectures that the site was outside the N gate, but presumably because the better known St John's was on the S of the town. All the authorities agree that the 2 hospitals were distinct, but there does seem room for some doubt. (1) (2) (3)
No further evidence for this hospital has been found either in the field or in recording. (4)
Grid ref approx - not drawn on map.
See M 4784 for St John's Hospital, M 5544 for alternative site.
