Full Description
Med cemetery, perhaps connected to parish church. 13/09/1984, watching brief on foundation trenches for rear extension - several graves, one certain body and a number of other bones (mostly long bones). 24-28/07/1986, soakaway at front of house - various disturbed bodies, 2 certain graves. 6 bodies identified in post excavation work. Cut through by an Edwardian rubbish pit. 21-24/05/1990, another extension to rear - 10 graves and 10 bodies, various other bones from disturbed burials. All E-W orientation. Infant with grave goods, 7 glass beads, 2 bronze shroud pins, pieces of bronze chain, bronze decorative setting for one bead. Possible earlier features, no dating. (1) (2)
Inhumation discovered in back garden of 26 Church Street. No sensible detail of orientation etc. reported. (3) (4)
Several other graves were cut by the later features, the majority of these contained a jumble of individual and partially articulated bones and it seems that several contained more than one body. In the SE corner of the trench several large stones appeared to be bedded in the red clay at the head of, and between grave cuts. Given they appear only in this corner of the trench, and their upright position, It is tempting to suggest a deliberate placing of the stones (as grave markers). Given the number of burials (at least 20) and the consistent alignment on an E - W axis, it seems reasonable to assume that the excavated site forms part of a cemetery, and is possibly Christian. The graves themselves are not datable, though they are later than deposits incorporating pottery of C14 - C15. They are also presumably earlier than enclosure (1790) as the area of excavation appears on the enclosure map as land occupied by two buildings. Given the mixed nature of the deposits it seems there are several episodes of burial. This would suggest some time depth of graveyard use in this area. (5)
