Full Description

Site of General Poyntz's Field HQ, Parliamentarian position in Civil War siege of Newark. A large entrenched camp stretching from River Devon to Hawton Road and divided into 2 parts by a cross rampart. It provided positions for 5 cannon. (1)
The indicated site of this entrenched work is now occupied by a modern housing estate and no extant remains could be identified. The situation is commanding with an all round open aspect. Doubtless the cannon were situate to cover the main line of march Newark-Nottm and the River Devon. (2)
See L3575 - "flood bank" - in this area.
