Full Description

Muskham Bridge … The Patent Rolls for the year 1376 record a grant of pontage to "the good men of Muskham by Newark for the repair of Haybrigge and the cause way between Newark and the bridge". (1)
The Heybrigg is mentioned several times during the C14 and was apparently destroyed during the Civil War. It was ruinous before this date, for Sir William Willoughby of South Muskham was indicted in 1603 "for not repairing the bridge across the Trent" and again the next year "for failing to repair the bridge of South Muskham". (2)
Reference to Heybrigg 1301. (3)
Before 1770 … the Great North Road crossed the NW branch of the Trent some 115 yds above the present bridge. In 1536 at the time of the Pilgrimage of Grace … a drawbridge was constructed at Muskham. The bridge was broken by ice in the winter of 1645. (4)
See M3093 for old route of road, M2980 for sconce, M5640 for battery, MNT26557 for replacement bridge.
