Full Description

Worksop Union Workhouse. (1)

Worksop Union Workhouse was built in 1837 at a cost of £4,400 and could accommodate 400 inmates (note: an alternative source states 200 inmates). It was located at the north side of East Gate in Worksop. The architect is unknown. However from Ordnance Survey maps (1:2500 1887, 1898, 1920) it is clear that the design followed Sampson Kempthorne's 'square' plan model published by the Poor Law Commissioners in 1835. The building had an impressive three-storey entrance facade. In 1900, children were removed from the workhouse to be accommodated separately. The workhouse buildings were demolished in 1965. (2)
